Wow! It's been a busy couple of weeks. With spirit week last week and all of the activities we've had, including the days we've had off. So it finally seems that we are getting back on track and schedule.
Everyone seems to be doing great. We've had some major accomplishments in class that I am very proud of. Some accomplishments from last week: Keezeng is multiplying from memory, Chavis made $1.00 out of quarters without help, and Symone and Rion completed a very difficult assignment without help and made a 100. These are just a few of the accomplishments from last week. Please let your child know that you are proud of him/her for all of the hard work and various accomplishments.

Week of October 13
I am FINALLY able to get on this page and give some updates! It has been such a busy week.
Spelling:
Group 1 - Continue studying the letter A and beginning working on the letter B.
Group 2 - yellow, too, want, are, did, that, she, do, get, get, will BONUS - have, brown, under
Group 3 - as, with, his, they, I
Science:
We have completed studying the sense of touch and are now working on the sense of sound. We know that we touch and feel with our hands and skin. We know that there are different ways that things feel such as soft, hard, rough, smooth, hot, cold, warm, etc. This week we began studying the sense of hearing. We use our ears to hear and listen. We learned that sometimes we know something is going on because we can hear it even if we can't see it. For example, the students closed their eyes and I clapped my hands. They had to tell me how they knew I was clapping me hands. We also discussed different sounds - things we enjoy hearing such as waterfalls, singing, laughter; things we don't like to hear such as fire alarms, alarm clocks, dogs barking, and bad singing. To continue working on these skills at home you may want to ask your child how something feels or sounds when they are involved in an activity. For example, if your child is petting a dog a good question would be, "how does the dog's hair feel".

Things to remember:
- Please sign agendas every night. There may be an important message in there for you.
- Please check homework. While your child may do the work independently, he/she may need further assistance.
- Down Syndrome awareness walk will be at Cleveland Park on Sunday 10/19 at 1:00

What a week!
What an exciting and fun week this has been!
We have come to the end of the first 6 weeks grading period. All students worked very hard and earned good grades and progress. Pictures were taken of students on Thursday and everyone looked great. I cannot wait to see how beautiful the pictures turn out!
Today (Friday), we participated in a chemistry project with Ms. "Witch" Duello's class. We made witches brew. We learned about observation by my first mixing freeze dried newt eggs and vampire blood, and seperately mixing vampire blood with dried mummy bones. We touched and looked at each mixture through a ziplock bag. After the 1st observations were made, all of the ghoulish ingredients were mixed together and new observations were made. We used our eyes to see the changes in texture and color, our ears to hear the sounds the mixtures were making, and our hands to feel the change of temperature and texture of the mixture.
Mrs. Green and I are looking forward to another exciting week!

First Post
Hello parents! I am so excited that our class now has a web page. I will be updating you on units, spelling/reading words, upcoming field trips, ideas for working with your child at home, helpful websites, and various local resources. I will also post pictures from classroom activities and field trips.
Helpful hint - there are 3 different spelling/reading groups in our class. I will not post students' names when I list their weekly words. However, in your child's agenda I will send home the name of your his/her spelling/reading group so you will know where to look for weekly words.
I will also post different stories that I think are cute, funny, sweet, or meaningful. I do hope you enjoy this blog. Please feel free to make comments.
In science we are currently working on the 5 senses. These are whole group lessons, so the difficulty level will vary for each child. We have just finished working on the sense of touch and will begin the sense of sound. All students truly seemed to enjoy the science activities. I am looking forward to getting started with the sense of sound.
This year we have started a new club called Perfect Pals. Each child in the classroom has been paired with another student from the school. They eat lunch together on the first and last Thursday of each month. The Pals also attend Special Olympic events. Last Thursday was the first time the club had lunch and it was an amazing sight to behold. Each student sat with his/her pal. They really looked forward to eating lunch with their new friends. After lunch, everyone went outside and visited with each other. Some students played basketball with their pals and friends, while some played tag, and others walked around and talked. It was an enjoyable experience for all students in the Perfect Pals club!
In closing for today, I want each of you to know how very special your child is to me. There are days when I don't feel like smiling or even talking (we all have them) and if weren't for these beautiful and wonderful children (yes I realize - some of them aren't children anymore), I'm not sure that I would have made it. They make me forget my worries. We are a family in my classroom. The older kids take care of and help the younger ones. The younger ones look up to the older ones.
Have a fantastic week!
