2.23.2009

As another month comes to a close, we seem to be as busy as ever!

This week there will be no new spelling words. Only students who did not pass last week's test, will have spelling homework this week.

There are a few new incentives that Mrs. Green and I have set in place for students.
"Caught you working hard" and "Caught you being good" is a reward system where students receive certificates for working hard or being good. At the end of each day, one name is drawn. The student whose name is drawn gets to pick a prize from the prize box.

The other new incentive is "Star Student". Students who do not lose any points all week, will get "Star Student" status on Friday. This means that they get privileges before other students, an extra treat will be given (such as ice cream, pizza, or outside time, etc...), and students will be recognized for their accomplishment. Please encourage your child to get Star Student status!

Next week students will participate in a science activity with the 8th graders. The Rock Man will be visiting and students will have the opportunity to mine for stones and minerals. Also a museum will be set up for students to examine rocks, stones, and minerals. This is paid for by classroom money we have made from selling cookies every Thursday. Many students work hard selling cookies and should be congratulated on their hard work. Because of the cookie sales, we are able to participate in events like visiting Rock Man and going on other field trips.

I hope you all have a great week!!!

Week of 2.2.09

Happy Monday to you all! I hope you all enjoyed your weekends and are ready to start the week off with a bang.

A couple of things to note:
Spelling words are becoming very difficult. I want to challenge the students though, so if your child is struggling, please be patient and give it time to pan out. I will allow students to re-take tests if they do not do well. If, after a period of time, your child continuously has to re-take spelling tests I will make necessary changes.
Beginning this week I will be giving sight words to all students. I will post these words on-line as well as send homework for practice. Please practice these words with your child every night.

Spelling words:
Group A - game, *today, play, *whale, name, brave, *maybe, baby, came, bake, ate, say, *stay, gave
* denotes bonus words

Group B - black, fast, thank, have, land, that, *ask, *catch, *matter
* denotes bonus words

Sight words:
find, two, little, you, see, I, a

01.21.2009

Welcome back! After the extra-long break, I am ready to get back into a routine. I hope you all were able to enjoy the snow...what there was of it.

Some things that we have discussed in class that you may want to review with your child at home:

New President - Barack Obama
Facts - 44th President, Historical Event - he is the first African American President, married to Michelle, and has 2 daughters.
New Vice President - Joe Biden

Also we have discussed the weather and the seasons. Students should be able to identify and use a thermometer as well as comprehend the use of a thermometer. They should also be able to tell what the weather feels like according to the temperature. For example if a thermometer says it is 45 degrees, the student should be able to tell that it is cold outside and also what should be worn in this weather. Please continue to work with your child at home on these skills.

Our class was scheduled to attend special olympics tomorrow (Thursday). However, due to the breaks and the extra snow day as well as the fact that so many students are not able to participate because they do not have medicals, we will not be attending. The next Special Olympics event will be held at SC School for the Deaf and Blind this spring.

Spelling words will resume next week.

What a great week it has been! It sure did fly by.

With the weather constantly changing and colds/viruses going around please be sure you are taking extra precautions with your child to ensure his/her health. Some things to do: remind him her to wash hands often, eat oranges, drink orange juice, drink water, eat foods that are healthy, take vitamins.

I want to clarify something. In my last blog I spoke of studying mealworms. However, I did not take into account that the next two weeks are short weeks. I will wait until the week of January 26th to begin that unit.

For the next two weeks, we will study the weather, seasons, and temperature. To help your child at home and extend our lessons, I will post ideas throughout the unit to help you at home.

I hope you all have a great weekend. Thank you for all of your support, questions, and suggestions. I have the best students and parents anyone could ask for!

Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful holiday.

We have completed our unit on the senses. Our next unit - studying meal worms and growth and change will begin next week.

As we get back into a routine, I have assigned new spelling words.

Group 2:
piece, read, beach, team, three, me, be, week, green, sleep

Group 3:
hand, map, hat, sad, fast

Students who have spelling words should have an envelope in which their words have been placed. These words should be practiced reviewed (reading and spelling) every night at home with an adult.
